This picture is of my Dad, Nicholas,
his mother, Olga, and younger brother,
Michael, from their joint passport, taken the
year they came to Canada, 1931.
They arrived in May, and traveled
across Canada by train.

Dad remembered his mother,
looking out the window of the train
at the miles upon miles of snow-covered
terrain, and crying despairingly:

"Sibeer, Sibeer......."

Passport Photos, 1931, to come to Canada

This is the family they were leaving.
It all looks very happy and peaceful,
however, my father remembered
the terror of having the political police
arrive to take away an uncle in the night.

Although my grandmother didn't want
to leave, it was considered desirable,
to ensure their continued safety, considering the political situation at the time, for people
that had been on the wrong side of the
Bolshevik Revolution.

My dad, young and idealistic.
I believe that the belief he taught me by
his example, that there is a solution to every problem shows in his face.

My Dad was a man of extremely few written words. These postcards from a trip to Hollywood survive, and convey the excitement he felt at visiting the center of the film universe. Postcard 1.jpg (29507 bytes)
He chose to come back to Canada, to Edmonton, and build the film industry there. Postcard 2.jpg (36378 bytes)
This picture was taken in the summer of about 1958. My brother Josh and I are in the front, and Dad is holding Zoltan. Dad, me, jz & zz.jpg (50908 bytes)
This was taken a few years later, with Zoltan and my third brother, Daryl, after we moved to an acreage outside Edmonton, where my Dad was continually building, modifying and inventing labor-saving devices, and encouraging my brothers to learn how to do the same. Dad with Z&D.jpg (48399 bytes)
We all worked in the family business at one time or another, and three of my brothers continue in the family tradition, to this day. This picture is of Dad and Scott, my youngest brother, with a camera. Dad loved photographic equipment, and we grew up surrounded by the latest technological advances. I think that's where we all gained love and respect for the inventors of the world. Dad & Scott.jpg (57047 bytes)
Dad and me at the Moviola (editing machine) at Cine Audio in the early 70's moviola.jpg (139196 bytes)
All my brothers inherited my Dad's mechanical genius. Here's Dad, in his later years, with Josh at Cine Audio. Dad & Joshn.jpg (38392 bytes)

Dad with my son Cadeyrn, the first of his four grandchildren, 1990. Dad with baby cnc.jpg (42340 bytes)
Dad continued while he was well enough, to foster the same kind of learning he gave us. When Cadeyrn was a toddler, he sent him tools and an old projector to take apart. In this picture, they are working on a car that he was making for Cadeyrn. Dad with gokart.jpg (63424 bytes)

Dad, visited by grandchildren, at Cine Audio, where he continued to work after officially retiring. Dad & grandkids.jpg (61823 bytes)
Dad, outside the back door to Cine Audio, the company that he founded, now carried on by Josh, Daryl and Scott. Dad at Cine.jpg (35107 bytes)
Dad, in later years, always thinking. Reflective Dad.jpg (41478 bytes)

More to come, as I get the time....
